Unlike other programs on breast cancer, Breast Cancer Journey doesn't give one statistic, name one new treatment or even ask a doctor what he or she thinks. Instead, viewers receive expert first-hand knowledge from a group of seventeen woman with breast cancer who share their own remarkable stories. Barbara Jabaily wisely chooses a natural, non-narrated, straight-shot talking-head style of filming with minimal editing, virtually no arty camera-work, and--thank goodness--no sound-bites. These seventeen women were simply allowed to tell their story, from finding the lump (the "time bomb ticking away on my chest") to various surgery and other treatment choices, the redefining of sexuality, the support of family and friends, and getting through the experience with a new sense of gratitude and hope. The emotional rollercoaster these women experienced is shared in personal poetry (such as the beautiful Goodbye, Beloved Breast) and gut-wrenching recollections (the chemotherapy "brought me to my knees"). Insightful and articulate, these women offer a clear-eyed report of the personal side of the battle with breast cancer. Highly recommended. Incidentally, libraries should check out a wonderful website devoted to up-to-the-minute breast cancer information: www.breastcancer.net. Aud: C, P. (N. Plympton)
