This is interesting viewing: sick women blame their illnesses on companies that produce silicone breast implants; the companies blame rapacious lawyers for their lawsuits; the lawyers blame the doctors whose research tells their clients that they aren't sick, and the doctors blame the huddled masses for not believing them when their research says intact implants are harmless. Add to that the doctors who are in cahoots with the corporation-funded research into the health implications, and the limo-riding doctors who are paid as expert witnesses and referral sources for the lawyers. The bottom line in this Frontline episode is that the FDA is heavily blamed, even though the 1992 move to block additional silicone implant surgery was taken well after the popular media frenzy about illness and implants and after the first $7.3 million dollar injury claim had been won in court (it was not a premature move as is implied). While the blame games go round and round, the viewer is left wondering about the women: are they really ill, and if so, why hasn't science "proved" it? Still, due to the continuing controversy over the subject, this is recommended. Aud: C, P. (R. Reagan)
