Featuring personal stories from the combat frontlines of World War II and the Korean War, the six-volume Brothers in Arms includes eyewitness accounts from CBS's Mike Wallace, senators Bob Dole and Daniel Inouye, actors Eli Wallach and Douglas Fairbanks Jr., and lesser-known but no less heroic men and women, who share their experiences both on the battlefield and on the home front. Host/narrator Glenn Ford opens the series with a look at the events leading up to U.S. involvement in World War II, followed by the first thousand days of the war. Volumes 2-4 chronicle the course of WWII in 1943, 1944, and 1945, respectively, while the final two volumes examine the rising political tensions that erupted into the Korean conflict. Along the way, viewers will also hear about home front experiences, from ration books and painted hosiery to Victory Gardens and Maxine Andrews' (the surviving member of the Andrews Sisters) reminiscences about selling war bonds, producing songs and films to lift morale, and going abroad to entertain the troops. Brothers in Arms does a commendable job of charting the chronology of WWII and the Korean War, personalizing the battles, and helping contemporary viewers understand what it meant to be an American during those trying times.
