A powerful look at the effects of the attack on Pearl Harbor as seen through the eyes of a wide variety of individuals--civilians, soldiers, Americans, Japanese, and, perhaps most poignantly, Japanese-Americans--much of this material has been the subject of various other programs: the attack on the American fleet, the internment of the Japanese-Americans (the most graphic of the segments), and the memories of veterans, but here the narrative threads leading up to and following the day that will live in infamy have been woven together into a satisfying whole. Sure to stimulate discussion among both students and general viewers, By Dawn's Early Light keeps the focus on individuals, combining interviews with survivors, historians, and psychotherapists in its exploration of issues that often were shared across ethnic lines (black sailors and Japanese-Americans, for instance, both faced racial prejudice). Large public libraries, as well as high school and college libraries who have the budgets to acquire this program--which is somewhat more costly than similar Pearl Harbor-themed titles--will find it well worth the expense. Recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (J. Carlson)
