What? No tour of the Tour Eiffel, no Seine sightseeing cruise, no visit to the spectacular Opèra? As with writer/producer/narrator Glenn Scott's previous title, Rome Revisited, the Renewal of Splendor (VL-3/96) this is a narrowly focused architectural history instead of a tourist video. While the Gothic era is mentioned, the primary focus is on the 16th and 17th centuries--a pivotal time in French history--and the monumental structures of that era. Also in common with the Rome title, antique maps are used to show the growth and development of the city and its principal structures. The camerawork with the maps is a little rough, with some improvement needed for the telephotoing and camera movement. In views of present day Paris, there are plenty of exterior shots of notable structures, but there are few interior scenes. However, it must be remembered that it is hugely ambitious to try to fit even this limited amount of Parisian architecture into just one 60-minute tape, and this video will give viewers a basic grounding in pre-Revolutionary Paris.
