This superbly produced PBS documentary explores the fascinating world of the Big Apple Circus, a traditional one-ring revue that conducts training in upstate New York, travels to gigs in medium-sized cities, and then settles in for a stay of several months in Manhattan. During a single season, this band of show business gypsies—many with a long lineage in the business—becomes a family of sorts, which director Maro Chermayeff's Circus examines from top to bottom, including management, clowns, high-wire acts, and animal trainers (as well as tent riggers and ticket takers). Members of the troupe deal with professional rejection, illness, injuries, and the indignities of living in close quarters, which one compares to year-round camping. Although most of the interviewees claim that circus life is in their blood, some of the younger performers contemplate the possibilities of college and careers in the wider world, while others admit that the big top attracts those who are running away from something—soured relationships, past failures, even the law. Every day brings new challenges, ranging from bad weather to interpersonal rifts, and even as the acts refine their demanding routines, some express concern for their future, given shrinking audiences due to both the faltering economy and the myriad of entertainment options available. However, they also take great pride in being merchants of thrills and good humor. Extras include behind-the-scenes footage and character profiles. An enthralling look at life under the big top, this is highly recommended. Editor's Choice. Aud: C, P. (S. Rees)
