A disturbing biography of underground comics legend Robert Crumb, director Terry Zwigoff's documentary has been showered with accolades and awards for its unblinking portrait of the artist as one seriously twisted pup. Bookended between an older brother who lived at home with their mother most of his adult life, and a younger brother with multiple convictions for sexual molestation, Robert's misogynistic comics and cold-fish relationships with the fairer sex almost seem to be the healthiest choice of a trio of siblings who clearly had major psychological problems. A truly creepy film. Highly recommended. (R. Pitman)[DVD Review—Apr. 18, 2006—Sony, 120 min., R, $19.95—Making its second appearance on DVD, 1995's Crumb sports a great transfer with DVD extras including audio commentary by director Terry Zwigoff and film critic Roger Ebert, an exclusive scene from Zwigoff's 2006 film Art School Confidential (2 min.), and trailers. Bottom line: a solid extras package for an excellent documentary.][DVD/Blu-ray Review—July 20, 2008—Criterion, 120 min., R, $39.95—Making its latest appearance on DVD and first on Blu-ray, 1995's Crumb features an excellent transfer and Dolby Digital mono sound. DVD extras include two audio commentaries (one with filmmaker Terry Zwigoff from 2010; the other with Zwigoff and critic Roger Ebert from 2006), unused footage (52 min.), a stills gallery, and a booklet featuring an essay by film critic Jonathan Rosenbaum and artwork by Charles, Jesse, Maxon, and Robert Crumb. Bottom line: a solid extras package for a great documentary.]
