Reigning hitmakers of the 1970s and ‘80s, Daryl Hall and John Oates travel to the Emerald Isle for this July 2014 concert—their first-ever in Dublin—held before an appreciative crowd. Backed by an excellent band (including alumni from the Average White Band), the duo—Hall on guitars, keyboards, and primary vocal duty, with Oates on guitars—serve up a meaty 15-song set (including two encores) from their 40-year-plus career, including “Sara Smile,” “She's Gone,” “Maneater,” “Kiss On My List,” and “Private Eyes.” Rather than performing the original radio-friendly three-minute versions of the songs, however, the pair let them breathe with a funk/smooth jazz jam, bolstered by many soulful sax solos from Charlie DeChant, playful percussion by Porter Carroll, and steady bass by Klyde Jones, along with solid input from the rest of the tight band. Presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 and stereo on DVD, and DTS-HD 5.1 and LPCM stereo on Blu-ray, extras include interview featurettes with Hall and Oates, and (on the DVD edition only) two CDs. Boasting a room-filling sound that is both rich and clear, this stellar concert should appeal to a fairly wide audience. Highly recommended. (R. Pitman)
