What happens when you combine Doc Watson on guitar and David Grisman on mandolin? PICKIN'! Filmed in concert on March 21, 1998, Watson and Grisman, backed by Jack Lawrence, pick up a storm in this foot-tapping hour-plus of bluegrass, country, folk and Grisman's own "dawg" music. Selections include: "Shady Grove," "Summertime," "Sweet Georgia Brown," "Kentucky Waltz," "In the Pines" (popularized again by Nirvana in 1994 as "Where Did You Sleep Last Night"), "Deep River Blues" and a dozen others. The brief interview clips between tunes (which, in my opinion break the rhythm somewhat) offer insights into Watson and Grisman's backgrounds, influences and relationship. And though they don't say a lot on stage, when they do it's kind of funny. (Watson to Grisman on playing a "dawg" tune: "don't get it too fast" to which Grisman replies "how about half-fast? (pronounced, of course, "half-assed"). A solid concert by a pair of fingerpicking virtuosos. Recommended. (R. Pitman)
