A follow-up to the successful music video Dr Devious: Dance in Cyberspace, this impressive computer-animated video--done entirely on the Amiga--is an eye-opening testament to the power of relatively low-end computer animation (compared to the computers used to create animated sequences for Hollywood blockbusters such as Jurassic Park). As the computer "camera" zips over landscapes, down psychedelic-colored 3-D tubes, and across flowery fractals, the "rave" soundtrack (kind of a technopop sound--synth and drum machine--coupled with spoken words) intones a series of non sequiturs such as "but not as we know it," "under the circumstances," "elevate your mind," etc. Except for a brief clip lifted from the feature film Koyaanisqatsi and a sound bite taken from the Sega Genesis videogame Toejam and Earl--a practice that contemporary musicians call "sampling" and lawyers call "copyright infringement"--the material appears to be original. A multi-purpose music video, Dr. Devious: More Dance in Cyberspace would serve as a decent computer-animated title, a good party tape, or a relaxation/meditation video to unwind by. Not quite in a class with Miramar's The Mind's Eye and Beyond the Mind's Eye (reviewed in our April 1991 and December 1992 issues, respectively), this is still pretty fun. Recommended. (See ANIMATED MUSICAL STORIES & SONGS 4 KIDS IN 3 DIMENSIONS for availability.)
