According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, over 17,000 Americans died last year in alcohol-related traffic deaths. Divided into two parts, Drunk Driving: The Victim, The Offender, hosted by ABC TV news anchor Alan Krashesky, interviews both victims and offenders. Reminding viewers that drunk driving fatalities are not “accidents” but preventable tragedies (and ultimately, crimes), the first segment interviews victims and family members who tell their sorrowful stories with matter-of-fact precision, sometimes with the hollow, haunted sound of a police report, other times with painfully vivid imagery (one man describes the wreckage of his loved one's vehicle as looking like a “pop can full of blood that someone smashed with their foot”). In the second segment, two drunk-driving offenders (who were in crashes that resulted in fatalities) tell their stories with remorse, offering a public penance for their actions. The enclosed study guide includes program objectives and discussion points. Highly recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (C. Block)
