Federal Follies (Vol. 1,2,3)

These initial three volumes, which contain a sampling of the U.S. government's "greatest hits", are a mixed bag. Vol. 1 features "Blondes Prefer Gentlemen", an amusing look at the Navy's idea of proper manners; "The Decision is Yours", in which a sailor's conscience over impregnating a girlfriend gets worked over by the Chaplain; and "Duck and Cover", the classic classroom drill in the event of nuclear war. Vol. 2, the best, has the Disney-animated "Cleanliness Brings Health", a story about the Clean and Careless families, with sound instructions on building a latrine; "Primordial Soup", Julia Child's inimitable style pervades this concoction of the building blocks of life (that style always leads one to believe that Julia has been into the cooking sherry); "Our Job in Japan", the Dr. Seuss directed admonition to guard against the Japanese brain (although an "historical" film, many people are likely to find this offensive); and "How to Succeed With Brunettes", more on Naval manners. The final volume consists of "Trip to Where", a 40 min. examination of the evils of drugs; and "Your Job In Germany", another Dr. Seuss epic with the same caveat as above. Neither as hilarious as we expected, nor as educational, these films could be useful to non-discriminating party givers. Appropriate for larger public libraries.
