At the age of 35, three months pregnant, Jan Distel-Schwartz, learned that she had cervical cancer. The obvious choice would have been to give up the baby, but instead she fought back by learning everything she could about the disease. She does not recommend that everyone choose as she did; together with her husband Michael Mears, she merely emphasizes that there is a choice. Following a brief personal introduction, Jan and her husband turn the program over to four other survivors, with initial problems ranging from leukemia to a brain tumor. They try to pin down the underlying thread that binds these survivors together. Although each survivor tells a different story, they all refused to accept the diagnosis that they were going to die, engaged in active research about their disease, and refused to be treated as ordinary patients living under a death sentence. In addition to the personal testimonials, Dr. Bernie Siegel (author of Love, Medicine, and Miracles) tells numerous anecdotes about his experiences with cancer patients and what he's learned from them. The final section of this two-hour plus program contains relaxation exercises and positive visualization techniques. What's really helpful about this program is that the information is applicable to a number of diseases, especially the so-called fatal ones. The hope may be a slim one, in many cases, but some percentage of people survive all of these terminal illnesses. Highly recommended. (See BLACK MAGIC for availability.)
