In February 1994, a cancer specialist diagnosed 47-year-old Wally Hild with near-terminal Hodgkin's disease. Unwilling to merely sit out his time, Hild embarked on an eight-month course of aggressive chemotherapy, and in August 1994 decided he would train to compete in an Ironman Canada Triathlon, a grueling, 17-hour event consisting of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride, and 26.2 mile running marathon. I guess it wouldn't reveal too much of the story to tell you that, despite an unexpected knee injury, Hild does whip his cancer and finish the Triathlon, to the cheers and admiration of friends, family, and co-athletes. An incredible story which is somewhat diluted by the fact that most of the scenes of his illness and treatment are dramatizations, so we don't really get to experience the physical progression he made, or get a true sense of how far he had to come in order to participate at that level of athletic competition. Optional. Aud: P. (K. Glaser)
