Generation Earth could very well be subtitled: "Two Cute College Guys with Cool Ideas About Teaching and the Environment." Jeff Barrie and Tyson Miller, classmates in the Environmental Studies Program at UCLA, take us on a hip and energetic jumpcut tour of selected urban and rural schools throughout the U.S. that are involved in often wonderfully creative programs in hands-on environmental education, conducted both on campus and in the surrounding community. Projects range from student-directed school and community environmental audits, to the construction of school ecosystem labs or "greenspots;" from exercises in environmental politics, to student-run eco-teaching projects in local elementary schools. Rather than presenting a detailed look at any one of these projects, the video serves as a broad sampler of nifty ideas and inspirations (assembled with MTV-style editing and a rock back-beat). A 42-page how-to manual which accompanies the video provides more detailed descriptions, resources, and ideas concerning potential projects. Just on the basis of its good humor, energy, earnestness and optimism alone, Generation Earth would be a difficult film to dislike. That it offers an array of fabulous ideas for making school curricula relevant, effective, and fun makes it extremely useful and timely, as well as entertaining. Highly recommended for public and school libraries, and libraries interested in teacher education. Aud: J, H, C, P. (G. Handman)
