One of the most surprising revelations made during this excellent documentary from the National Geographic Society is the striking physiological similarities between humans and the gorilla. Gorillas, for instance, also have unique fingerprints, and are susceptible to many of the same diseases as humans. Written, produced and directed by Barbara Jampel, this colorful program focuses on the life of the mountain gorilla, found in the rain forests of Rwanda in Central Africa. Through the dedicated work of people like Penny Patterson, who taught sign language for the deaf to the gorillas, and Dianne Fossey, who spent 13 years studying gorillas (before leaving in frustration over the huge numbers lost to poachers), the viewer is shown the life cycle and contemporary problems facing this magnificent beast which may be facing extinction. Top-notch production values throughout. Highly recommended.
