Developed by German physician Samuel Hahneman two centuries ago, homeopathy is defined as the science of using specific doses of natural medicines to trigger the body's defense mechanisms so it can heal itself. Homeopathic practitioners believe that each individual has a “life force” that maintains health until altered by extreme or prolonged stress. A basic homeopathic principle is “like cures like” or “the law of the similar,” illustrated here with the example of a person who has hay fever: since the allergic reaction produces tears, sneezing, runny nose, and other symptoms, the homeopathic approach is to administer something like “alum capa” (derived from the red onion) because it produces similar reactions. While a great deal of energy is expended in interview footage here defending homeopathy, castigating conventional medicine, and providing scientific proof of the success of Hahneman's method, many will remain skeptical. Still, whether they are believers or not, viewers can use the program as a basis to explore homeopathy and make their own decisions regarding its efficacy. Recommended. Aud: C, P. (S. Fisher)
