With over 60 dog racing facilities serving more than 280 major cities, and estimated yearly attendance topping 3 million, interest in dog racing continues to grow. Chris Carl, a real estate broker who finds more cash flow at the dog races than by selling homes, outlines his scientific method for handicapping dogs in this three tape series covering Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced skills. We watched the Basic tape, which opened with a brief overview of dog racing and the various types of cash prizes awarded, and then walked viewers through the ten areas where Carl assigns numerical values based on track conditions and dog performance (such as time, class, and consistency). Good on-screen graphics and excellent racing footage complement the solid voice-over instruction; however, libraries need to consider a couple items: 1 forms which the viewer can copy are included with the videos, and 2 although the tapes stand alone, the opening tape directs viewers to the other two tapes; therefore libraries who purchase should acquire the entire set. More comprehensive than How to Handicap the Greyhounds: The New Approach (VL-7/89), How to Win Big Money at the Dog Races! is recommended. (R. Pitman)
