After a brief introduction by an actual human being, we switch to a filmstrip transferred to video, which uses a wide array of art and music--particularly by Monet and Debussy-- to discuss the respective growths and overall similarities between impressionistic representations of art and music. Part One is an overview of the movement and focuses on the works of 19th century greats: Claude Monet and Claude Debussy. The narrative instruction points out the abandonment of representational art and music in favor of an unstructured response to nature's stimuli, demonstrated in the startling use of color by Monet and the mood music of Debussy. Part Two follows the tradition of impressionism in art and music up through our own time by examining selected pieces by Degas, Pissarro, Van Gogh, Kandinsky, and Picasso in art; and excerpts from musical works by Delius, Ravel, and Stravinsky. Recommended for libraries with strong arts collections. (Available from: Educational Audio Visual, Inc., Pleasantville, NY 10570).
