Sure, a full-fledged zoologist could have been our tour guide through the San Diego Zoo, but then we'd have missed Whoopi Goldberg's acute woman-on-the-street observations ("that rhino has the biggest butt I've ever seen in my life"). In this charming and delightful entry from the In the Wild series, host Whoopi has a marvelous time--and, by extension, so do we--feeding a baby rhino, meeting an albino koala bear, tracking the progress of efforts to save the California Condor and--in a particularly touching sequence--bonding with a heartbreakingly cute baby chimp. Although there are a few shots of overseas animal slaughter (the black market continues, unfortunately, to thrive), as well as a little monkey business (just as the Brits enjoy their afternoon tea, chimpanzees often do fancy a wee bit--say, 10 seconds--of sex off and on during the day), most of the program is simply adorable, not to mention entertaining and informative. Highly recommended. Aud: J, H, P. (R. Pitman)
