Perhaps there is no better single indicator of culture or geography than food: growing, harvesting, preparing, and eating a meal reveals much about a people and their country. In this episode from the 25-part series There is No Food Like My Food, which explores countries or regions through the eyes of an adolescent and through the medium of cuisine, we are introduced to a yummy day in the life of 12-year-old Renymol from Kerala, the “land of coconut trees,” in southern India. She helps her mother prepare a breakfast dish, and then goes to the nearby canals with her best friend to buy supplies from the floating merchants for her father's birthday dinner, later joining the other women of the family as they prepare fish, vegetables, and spices for the festive occasion. While the concept is certainly interesting, and a young narrator helps students connect with the content, there isn't a lot of solid contextual information here--not even a map to show Kerala's location. Other titles include: Georgia (Formerly of USSR): Salomé in Georgia, Israel: Muhammad in Israel, Spain: Antonio in Spain and USA: Chris in Louisiana. Optional. Aud: I, J. (E. Gieschen)
