Georgia is a country sandwiched between the black sea and Azerbaijan. It has a long history of conflict and annexation with larger empires including Rome, Persia, Byzantium, and the USSR. In the last century, the long-lasting vassalisation of the country has fueled a powerful nationalist movement that has ruled virtually without opposition since the fall of the USSR. Nationalist movements often rely not on ideology or true populism but on hatred to maintain their political sway.
Instructions for Survival focuses on one arm of this hatred: Transphobia. Alexander is a transgender Georgian trying to live his life. He and his wife were forced to move and hide when they first married, and now -with the Georgian state taking an official and violent stance against all queer individuals- they seek to flee the country for fear for their lives. Somewhat stoic and an absolute realist, Alexander shares his thoughts as he navigates the mean streets of Georgia searching for a chance to make enough money to flee to a country where people like him are treated with basic dignity instead of the perpetual threat of violence.
This intense and touching documentary is director Yana Ugrekhelidze's film debut. With an eye for striking cinematography and graceful use of the camera which bring new meaning to fly-on-the-wall perspective, we are shown an intimate portrayal of a queer man living in an outright queerphobic society. This documentary doesn’t intrude to the point of pure voyeurism like many similar films. Every shot has meaning. Every shot has intention. I hope we’ll see more documentary films from her in the future.
Alexander’s story will ring true for many trans people across the world who struggle to find proper medical care, economic stability, and social or familial acceptance. His life in Georgia provides a powerful and thought-provoking film experience that doubles as an examination of human rights. Alexander says that living as a trans person in Georgia is like “sitting on a bomb that could explode any day.” Thoughtful, pensive, engrossing, and honest, Instructions for Survival belongs in every queer documentary collection. Highly Recommended. Editor’s choice.
