At first, Michel Negroponte's documentary seems like a bizarre portrait of a crazy homeless woman living in Central Park. Carrying an oversized backpack and walking her five dogs, Maggie spins yarns about being married to the Roman god Jupiter, hears voices from other mythical figures, and claims to be the daughter of actor Robert Ryan. As Negroponte explores her world for several years, he brilliantly uncovers the truth behind her fabrications, deciphers her elaborate coping mechanisms, and reveals a woman who has endured a harsh and painful life. Winner of the Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, Jupiter's Wife is thought-provoking, insightful, and heart-wrenching. Don't miss it. (L. Russo)
