British folksinger-songwriter Kate Rusby has developed an enthusiastic following in the last dozen or so years for bringing emotional immediacy to ancient ballads, sea shanties, lullabies, and the like. The South Yorkshire artist adapts material from some of her popular studio albums in this live concert, including the evocative waltz "Polly," the beaming "I Courted a Sailor," and the fragile plaint "Who Will Sing Me Lullabies?". Rusby's crystalline vocals are superbly backed by an outstanding, all-acoustic band, which makes traditional music quite new again on the pop-like "The Cobbler's Daughter," as well as the haunting "Withered and Died." Rusby's repertoire includes timeless tales of dragons, knights, and fair maidens (including this set's "Sir Eglamore"), but she even manages to make these as personally expressive as anything else she does. Presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 and stereo, the DVD also features behind-the-scenes footage and biographies. Highly recommended. Aud: P. (T. Keogh)
