Based on a classic of African oral literature, The Sundjata Epic, this charming tale examines the clash between traditional mythology and contemporary history in Africa. When a griot (bard) arrives at the home of Mabo Keita, to teach the boy his heritage, the boy is quickly caught up in the colorful epic of his ancestors. In fact, Mabo is so enthralled with the story that he begins skipping school, much to the consternation of his teacher and his parents. Keita carries the message of the importance of cultural literacy while also offering a rousingly entertaining tale in its own right. (R. Pitman)
