"Sure, I might have killed someone, I don't know," Virginia says casually, referring to the many drive-bys she participated in when she was in a gang. Now she's completely blind due to a gunshot wound she received in a street battle. Hers is one of several chilling testimonials given by young people in this no-soft-talk video on gun violence. Another excellent installment in the PBS series In The Mix, this program paints a bleak picture of the escalation of deadly violence that carrying weapons often provokes. Society often glamorizes guns and the gangsta lifestyle, but the brutal reality is that death respects no one, and guns allow a moment of anger to become an eternal mistake. Viewers are told that every day sixteen teens' lives are cut short by a bullet. That statistic alone is reason enough for this timely video, which deals with approaching conflicts safely, coping with losing loved ones to violence, and the movement to restrict firearms, especially in the hands of minors.
