"You mention cancer in a room full of about 200 and you can actually hear the butt cheeks clench. It's audible." Scott Burton, cancer survivor and comedian, has been there, done that and understands some things about one of our most terrifying fears. The oldest and truest way to pass on experiences is through storytelling, and in this program, viewers hear from well-spoken, courageous individuals who discuss their diagnosis, their own emotional reactions and that of family and friends, their options and treatments, and how the experience changed their lives. Many of these survivors took matters into their own hands by assembling a powerful medical and support team, and taking an active role in the treatment of their disease. Interwoven with the personal stories is contemporary research into the causes of cancer and the race for the cure. Because cancer is actually a group of over 100 diseases, a single cure is unlikely, though recognizing abnormalities in the DNA and mending damaged cells (gene therapy), developing less caustic approaches to treatment, and a possible breakthrough in immunology therapy, where good cells of the host are educated to ‘seek and destroy' bad cells, like a vaccine, offer a promising future. For now, these storytellers give us all hope, and as one survivor suggests, we each have a long list of extras, let's focus on the short list of what matters. Highly recommended. Editors Choice.
