The history of veteran-specific medical care goes back to the American Revolution. However, it wouldn’t be until the 1880s that the Veterans Administration would be founded. Since that time, there have been massive strides in medical care for veterans, including plastic surgery, physical therapy, mobility aids, and prosthesis. One area which has always lagged in veteran-specific healthcare is sexual health and education. Far too often, the only discussion of sex with soldiers is how to avoid sexually transmitted diseases. This issue compounds when soldiers experience life-changing injuries during their service. Love After War is a groundbreaking study of sex and sexuality in disabled veterans. Multiple disabled veterans, their spouses, and medical experts all lend their voices to this informative documentary.
Love After War is incredibly unique. Having seen many documentaries focused on sexology, I can confidently say it blows others out of the water. Not only is the documentary compelling and well organized, Love After War addresses a critical and ever-overlooked issue: The sexual experience of disabled veterans. Both physical and psychological life-changing injuries often result in some form of sexual dysfunction. Veterans with PTSD often report issues with sexual performance, either being unable to engage in sex or feeling dread or depression after the act. Physically disabled veterans face a number of sexual issues that remain woefully under-addressed in their medical care.
Love After War seeks to begin a discussion about disability and sexual health through the experiences of disabled American veterans. It also touches on the issues unique to married couples where one of the individuals acts as both caretaker and spouse. Those interested in veteran healthcare, disability, and sexuality will be most interested in this documentary. This title is most recommended for military-specific libraries, but public libraries that serve large populations of veterans may also find a lot of use in this title. Highly Recommended.
