Originally produced and aired by Yorkshire Television for the BBC, Machines & Moments, one of five titles in the Physical Science Series, effectively explores the scientific principles behind the operation of simple machines--such as levers--using fun examples, including the basic rules of physics governing the raising of a circus big top. Underscoring the importance of simple machines in everyday life, the program deftly interweaves requisite vocabulary, employs clear graphics, and benefits from superb editing and creative scripting (in one excellent segment two acrobats are used as human levers to illustrate concepts such as balancing moments and pivot points). An excellent overview of the subject, this is highly recommended. The other titles in the series are: Temperature & Heat, Electricity for the Future, Light & Reflection, and Magnetism. Aud: I, J. (E. Gieschen)
