The story is true. It is only this documentary that is a lie. But so, for a time, was writer and director Dirk Shafer's life. He was Playgirl magazine's 1992 Man of the Year, and was displayed in photographs and paraded on talk shows as a woman's ultimate sexual fantasy. It was only after a friend died of AIDS that he revealed the truth that he was gay. Shafer may have intended this as a parody of conventional documentaries, but he undermines his credibility by utilizing scripted interviews, obviously-staged dramatizations and actors supposedly portraying real people (and not very convincingly at that).
