A blunt, painful, yet often uplifting documentary about genetic testing and the ethics of determining who should be born and who should not, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's Measuring Up does not treat its subject abstractly, as several families and individuals who have had to make or live with such decisions are interviewed, including people coping with Down syndrome, cystic fibrosis, Huntington's disease, and more. What becomes apparent is that there are no one-size-fits-all answers to the many questions that the whole of society must address. What is the genetic norm? Which birth defects, abnormalities, or other variations in human beings should be eliminated? A powerful film that also looks back on the eugenics policies of the 1920s and '30s (and suggests that we not make the same mistakes today), this thought-provoking short film is recommended.
