These two programs in Treccani's Art and Architecture Series focus on the contributions of the medieval Florentine dynasty, the Medici family. The first title chronicles the history of the Palazzo Vecchio, the very symbol of Florentine power, which was constructed more to impress than to provide creature comforts. Outside stands Michelangelo's David, while inside the walls are adorned with the works of Vespucci and others. The story follows the rise of the Medici family, culminating in the reign of Cosimo I 'de Medici, a great patron of the arts, and the concomitant growth and decoration of the Palazzo Vecchio. Connoisseurs of the period would find this somewhat dry and scattered presentation interesting, but general patrons are likely to get lost in the labyrinthine Medici family tree. The second title is not only more specific, but also of more interest to libraries, examining as it does, the history of the Laurentian Library. Designed by Michelangelo, the library benefited greatly from the donations and active searching out of manuscripts by the Medici bibliophiles Cosimo the Elder and Lorenzo the Magnificent. Numerous close-ups of beautifully illustrated rare manuscripts are shown, and the invention of moveable type and its effect on the dispersion of knowledge are discussed. In 1571, Cosimo opened the library to the public, thereby furthering the concept of the public library. The first title is an optional purchase, the second is recommended.
