In this six-part series, the ubiquitous Bill Moyers attempts to bring the experience of poetry to today's viewers. "Poets are the keepers of language and memory, and the stewards of honest emotions," he says. And, in the episode we previewed, Ancestral Voices, language and memory are intertwined as poets Mary Tall Mountain, Garrett Hongo, and Joy Harjo read works which both revere and maintain the memories of their respective ancestors. Unlike a number of modern poets, these three have written works that are, for the most part, quite accessible. In addition to the generous readings, the poets talk freely about both their upbringings and their craft. Libraries with strong literature collections are sure to want to add these fine programs to their collection. Recommended. (See CAN'T AFFORD TO GROW OLD for availability.)

All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
