One of the best of the alt-country, No Depression bands (the tag comes from the Uncle Tupelo recording of the titular Carter Family song, and includes bands and artists such as Wilco and Steve Earle) of the 1990s, the Old 97's whip up a deliriously good show at L.A.'s famous Troubadour in this excellent March 2004 concert. Drawing from each of their six critically acclaimed albums, the Houston-born group underscores its penchant for pop eclecticism balanced by gritty folk authenticity as they charge through the sonic and thematic legacies of the Kinks, Hank Williams, the Replacements, and the Beatles. The Old 97's sing of loss but blow gloom away with punky exhilaration on this 20-song set, with highlights including the oddball, power pop love song "Rollerskate Skinny," the stirring "Friends Forever," and the moving "Valentine." Presented in Dolby Digital 5.1. sound, DVD extras include a "making-of" documentary. Highly recommended. Aud: P. (T. Keogh)
