This three-volume series from the “Fred Friendly Seminars" held at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, examines the legal, ethical, and moral issues surrounding cloning and genetic research. Each of the standalone programs feature a host/moderator and a distinguished panel (including journalists, authors, scientists, scholars, think-tank members, even Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer). The first program, “Who Gets to Know?”, focuses on genetic testing and privacy, asking if and when insurance companies and employers should have legal access to test results. Volume two, “Making Better Babies,” raises questions about prenatal genetic testing, the ethics of cloning, “custom-made babies,” and other reproductive technologies. The third program, “Genes on Trial,” explores the nature vs. nurture debate--asking 1) whether there are genes that predispose someone to criminal behavior, 2) if there's a genetic basis for addiction, and 3) what role would personal choice and responsibility have if science determines that some behavior is essentially biologically hardwired? Solidly addressing serious questions about a timely topic, while also providing multiple viewpoints from the government, cultural, scientific, and religious sectors, this excellent series is highly recommended.
