Pasang: In the Shadow of Everest explores the remarkable journey of Pasang Lhamu Sherpa as she aspires to become the first Nepali woman to conquer Mount Everest in 1993. In a society where education is limited, and as an indigenous Buddhist in a predominantly Hindu kingdom, Pasang faces formidable social challenges both within her culture and outside of it. Her dream to scale the legendary peak places her in a battle against family expectations, foreign climbers, the Nepali government, and the unforgiving forces of nature.
Pasang's resolute determination plays out as a microcosm of her nation's larger struggles and aspirations. Through the voices of those who knew her, including prominent alpinists, her closest family, and Pasang herself, the film weaves a narrative that will thrill and entrance. Pasang's historic quest becomes a symbol of national pride, capturing the imagination of her country and instilling a renewed belief in the possibilities for a new generation.
This documentary is incredibly multifaceted. There’s a little bit of everything for everyone. It’s an Everest documentary, a climbing documentary, a women’s rights documentary, a history documentary, a cultural documentary, and more! The editing, the use of many types of footage, and the music come together to create an experience documentary lovers won’t want to end. Pasang elegantly dances between charming interviews and footage and fascinating facts about the female climber and her life.
The film can be very dramatic at times, but rightly so: I’m honestly surprised there hasn’t been a multi-million-dollar biopic made from her story. There is so much drama inherent to Pasang’s life. Library patrons who love pioneering women, climbing stories, and cultural studies will be floored by this fantastic film. Even people who don’t always like documentaries will be entertained by Pasang’s bravery and trailblazing spirit. Highly Recommended.
