A collection of three episodes on Pearl Harbor that aired on the Military Network, Pearl Harbor: Dawn of Death opens with “Win First, Fight Later,” which chronicles the evolution of Japan's centuries-old isolationist policies into a quest for world domination, as Japan became--in 50 short years--both a modern society and a powerful force to be reckoned with in the Pacific. Examining key historical events that propelled Japan into the attack on Pearl Harbor and WWII, the program also looks at growing U.S. influence in the Pacific. Part two, “Day of Infamy,” recreates the events of December 7, 1941 through eyewitness accounts from veterans, original photos, and black & white and color newsreel and military footage, including captured footage from the Japanese. Part three, “Waking a Sleeping Giant,” opens with Roosevelt's address to Congress requesting a declaration of war on Japan, and follows with a brief look at the Japanese attacks at Guam, Wake Island, Formosa, and the Philippines, before detailing the initial reaction of the American government, from an emergency FBI order to search Japanese-Americans and seize any questionable goods such as radios, cameras, books, etc., to the flock of military enlistments that immediately followed in the wake of the attack. Nearly 100 additional minutes of special features appear on the DVD, including compelling eyewitness accounts from American veterans and John Ford's Oscar-winning December 7, 1941. Although there is a definite pro-military slant, this title covers a lot of ground. Recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (L. Stevens)
