Pin-up style pictures, hyperventilating teenage girls...wait a minute...is this about Prince William, eventual heir apparent to Britain's current (if crumbling) dynasty, or the Backstreet Boys? Dedicated royal watchers will enjoy this wallowing meditation on the teenybopper aspect of the pouty and tousled little prince, which features plenty of pompous and dowdy Fleet Street "experts"--on board to evaluate everything from William's relationship with his pop, Prince Charles, to how he handles himself at the ribbon-cuttings and royal duties--within its pop-cultural trimmings. Although the emphasis is nominally on how William will handle his entry into the nasty old scandal-ridden world of privilege that his father and late mother have handed him, the program is mainly about a sandy-haired kid at the center of a perennial media storm, which will only increase as he approaches manhood. Not exactly saccharine--what with all the hand wringing about the hash William's forebears have made of things--this is still certainly a candy-coated presentation with tacky commentary (albeit with fine production values). In other words, it's just what fans of the royals apparently want. Better than Prince William: Prince Charming (VL Online), this is nevertheless an optional purchase. Aud: P. (M. Tribby)
