As writer, director, and producer of this fascinating episode from the popular PBS-aired American Experience series, Joseph Tovares presents a revisionist history of the fateful battle that took place at the Alamo mission, near San Antonio, Texas, on the morning of March 6, 1836. However, Tovares isn't rewriting the history books; rather, he lends the event a richer, more fair-minded perspective by casting himself as an equal-opportunity historian of Tejano descent. Remember the Alamo illuminates the neglected and tragic perspective of the Mexican Texans, or Tejanos, who occupied the region and found themselves politically divided as tensions escalated between American settlers and the Mexican Army, which defended Mexican rule in Texas under the flamboyantly reckless leadership of Gen. Santa Anna. Many Tejanos fought against their countrymen alongside the U.S. settlers, and this conflicted allegiance is best illustrated by the story of Tejano leader José Antonio Navarro, who initiated the independence movement that culminated in the Alamo showdown. That climactic battle has been traditionally reported as a U.S. vs. Mexico confrontation, but Tovares restores the significant role of Tejanos in the events leading up to the battle, and highlights the presence of Tejanos in the Alamo itself. Featuring a bonus interview with the filmmaker on the DVD version, this fine contribution to the study of Texan and American history is sure to be popular in the wake of the feature film release of The Alamo.
