Road to the Presidency is a DVD compilation of three documentaries about the 1992 presidential campaign originally produced for the PBS series The 90's--one on the Illinois Democratic primary (60 min.), the second on the Democratic convention (44 min.), and the third (60 min.) on the general election debates (or, more properly, the first debate, which included H. Ross Perot as well as George Bush, Sr. and Bill Clinton). The treatment here is deliberately ragged, more sporadically fly-on-the-wall than comprehensive, providing little context to the campaign for the uninitiated. But there are plenty of amusing backstage moments here, not to mention nuggets of insight for the more knowledgeable (and that would include those brave souls who slogged through Clinton's bestselling doorstop, My Life) looking for an offbeat treatment of the subject. Political junkies will especially appreciate the behind-the-scenes material dealing with the mechanics of the Clinton operation, which includes some revealing glimpses of the candidate himself, as well as of his not yet made-over wife Hillary, and extensive coverage of footnote figures like Jerry Brown and Paul Tsongas. DVD extras include a short film on the spin room set up for post-debate press coverage, and snippets identifying the major political personalities involved. A strong optional purchase. Aud: C, P. (F. Swietek)
