Presently available only to the library market, this excellent PBS-aired series chronicling the history of rock ‘n roll benefits from the wisdom of rock critic Robert Palmer (who penned the companion book). Feeling a bit Beethovenish, we watched the glorious ninth episode "Punk," which traced the early roots of the punk sound in New York garage bands like the Ramones to the British explosion spearheaded by the infamous Sex Pistols, and the gradual blending of reggae and punk which would define the sound of groups like The Police. Good interviews, solid analysis, great music, excellent price. Although The History of Rock ‘n Roll featured more faces and music clips, Rock & Roll offers more narrative insight. Crank it up. Highly recommended. Editor's Choice. (R. Pitman)
