Gina Gershon (Bound, Showgirls) originally designed this rock concert tour as a promotional event for the flop movie Prey for Rock and Roll, but became so caught up with the music and fans that she brought the cameras onstage and backstage to create these half-dozen 30-minute episodes originally broadcast on the Independent Film Channel. One might question the hype that Gershon is “the new queen of rock”--the influence of The Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde's vocal stylings is a little too obvious and much of the music performed here by backing band Girls Against Boys is presented with more enthusiasm than versatility and polish (the abbreviated two-week rehearsal time leads to unintentionally hilarious moments, such as when Gershon accidentally breaks a riding crop--designed as a tough-girl prop to whip cymbals and unruly fans--resulting in a frantic hunt by a tour assistant to find a store that can sell a replacement). Yet Gershon has enough charisma to float this series, which features more than a few unlikely surprises, including an impromptu onstage jam session with Lenny Kravitz and an open acknowledgement to Gershon's small army of highly enthusiastic lesbian fans (who clearly saw the sexy lesbian thriller Bound more than once). Whatever failings Gershon may have as a prefab rock icon, she knows how to work a camera and an audience, with the end result being that the viewer does, indeed, get rocked. DVD extras include deleted scenes. Recommended. Aud: P. (P. Hall)
