How to capture the Eternal City in forty-five minutes? Writer/producer Glenn Scott wisely chose to focus on the late Renaissance and Baroque eras, which provide architectural links to the classical Roman past while featuring some of this millennium's best-known buildings. Churches (including St. Peter's Basilica), monuments, palazzi and some of Brunelleschi's famous fountains are profiled, as are notable church frescoes, paintings, and sculptures. The text assumes a certain familiarity with architecture and history, which is great for the informed viewer but may leave others confused. Rick Steve's Travels in Europe series (VL-7/95) remains a first choice for general collections, but most libraries will want more than one title for popular destinations like Rome. This is a very good selection; recommended. (R. Reagan)
