Sam Maloof, an independent woodworker, is the subject of this semi documentary, which ranges from detailed close-up work in Maloof's shop to easy talk in the living room about the master craftsman's career. Maloof, who is primarily known for his work on chairs (he's designed some 50), makes about 50-60 pieces a year. Over the course of a week, the cameras follow him in his California home as he assembles one of his legendary Maloof rockers, a beautifully curvaceous, richly toned walnut rocking chair. Unfortunately, the hybrid approach of the program makes it of limited use to woodworkers. There's not enough how-to information given here to guide viewers through the various steps involved in making the chair (and the program never professes this as its purpose). But, on the other hand, there's too much in shop chitchat concerning the rocker, to make this program one of general interest to many viewers. Technically, the program matches the high video and audio standards of Taunton Press's video workshop series, but the half documentary/half how-to structure of the program leaves one wondering who the projected audience for the title will be. Not recommended. (Available from: Taunton Press, 63 S. Main St., Box 355, Newtown, CT 06470.)
