“The last part of me that is female is killing me,” ironically observes 52-year-old Robert Eads, who was born a woman, married, and had two sons before undergoing a sex change. Dying of ovarian cancer, Eads can't find a doctor comfortable with treating him. But in his last year of life, he enjoys the companionship of an extended family of transgender friends, as well as the unconditional love of a good woman, Lola Cola, a striking brunette who used to be a man. Especially out-of-place in their rural Georgia setting, the endearing societal misfits compassionately profiled in Kate Davis' documentary put faces on a subculture that often seems relegated to either textbooks or tabloids. At times uncomfortably forthright in its depiction of sexual and gender matters, this is an undeniably affecting work that challenges and dashes preconceptions, while expanding our notions of what it means to be human. Recommended. (T. Rich)
