With most attention in the world of military aviation being focused on stealth bombers and 21st century fighters, few people know about UAVs, or unmanned aerial vehicles--remote-controlled pilot-less aircraft that come in a variety of shapes and sizes, with many resembling something out of Star Wars. UAVs played a major role in the Afghan operation to roust the Taliban, but the Israelis have been the true champions of this type of aerial reconnaissance. Combining interviews, archival footage, and contemporary clips of these "flying spies" that range in size from as little as a portable CD player to as large as a jet, this NOVA episode goes behind the closed doors of UAV development to assess the technology's pluses and minuses, as well as speculate on the possibility that one day (in the not so distant future) military pilots may be largely replaced by UAVs. A solid, engaging title sure to appeal to a wide variety of interests--military, technology, science, and current events--this is recommended. Aud: C, P. (J. Carlson)
