Like its predecessor Step One to Seattle and Vicinity (VL-1/94), this similarly-formatted program is aimed more at re-locators than vacationers. Hosted by KATU TV 2's Cathy Marshall and John Marier, Step One to Portland and Vicinity introduces viewers to the "city of roses and rivers," providing a brief overview of Portland's history, climate, transportation, local arts and sports, as well as dividing the city into six geographical lifestyle areas: downtown, city neighborhoods, established upscale, commuter neighborhoods, cross border/interstate and country living, discussing the advantages of each. The accompanying booklet (referred to in the video) includes additional specific information regarding weather, school district scores, and crime data. Again, more for one-way travelers than those on vacation, this program will be a real boon to people planning a permanent move to Portland. Also available for the same price: Step One to Tacoma and Vicinity. Recommended. Aud: P. (R. Pitman)
