In this reverential bio-vid, former Texas head coach Darrell Royal is portrayed here as a larger than life living legend (think Pat O'Brien in Knute Rockne, All-American, but as a beer-drinkin' buddy of Willie Nelson). As college football god Keith Jackson opines, Royal "fit Texas to a T." In hushed tones, this program tells Royal's story from his poor but honest childhood as an itinerant Okie, through his hitchhiking college years and his record setting football career at the University of Oklahoma. After short stints at Mississippi State and Washington, he was the successful dark-horse coaching candidate to resurrect a moribund University of Texas program. From 1961-1970, Royal's Longhorns won three national championships, six Southwest Conference (SWC) championships, six bowl games (out of eight appearances) and made the top five in the national polls seven times. Judging by his frequent cameos on this vid, Royal also was a major inspiration to presidential hopeful George W. Bush. Although the program is pretty much silent regarding any sensitive episodes like integrating the SWC, this well-produced, inspirational in the rah-rah-sis-boom-bah tradition video about a college football coaching giant is a strong, optional purchase.
