A three-volume interview series with troubled teens, we watched the second volume in the series, A Time of Grief, in which teens talk about growing up in dysfunctional families scarred by sexual abuse, domestic violence, broken homes, and parental abuse of drugs and alcohol. Often it was a case of kids raising kids or kids raising themselves. One girl had to cope with the stalking murder of her mother by a jealous boyfriend. The young people talk honestly about what it feels like to be angry and lonely, to feel like you don't fit in anywhere and are looked down on by "normal" people. Unfortunately, the video's format is annoying: a series of brief vignettes regularly interrupted by titles announcing what we are about to see, an effect which is both unnecessary and pretentious. Since the video is part of a series which really needs to be viewed as a whole to be understood, and the series is only available as a series, I would rate this a marginal purchase. The other two titles in the series are: A Time of Rage and A Time for Healing. Aud: H, C, P. (S. Rees)
