How could a production featuring art works from twenty-three galleries and museums, plus unnamed private collections, have gone so wrong? Blame it on the time frame: ten minutes (less after titles and credits) to cover the works of any major American artist is a crime. Here paintings are shown for just seconds each, with very few close-ups and no discussion of the importance of each or time to help students develop critical appreciation. The use of high-tech dissolves only make the paintings look dead and stiff, a second-best to the sharp realism of videography. There was a real opportunity here to show great paintings and convey some understanding about technique, esthetics and significance. Instead we get a dizzying view of a bunch of "pictures" that appear flat and uninteresting even though the script assures us that Winslow Homer is "important." Homer's "importance" becomes another bland fact for students to memorize and not believe; this title is another missed opportunity for the fine arts to provide enrichment. Not recommended. Three other titles in the American Painter Set are also available: California and the World of David Hockney, The Children of Mary Cassatt, and The Southwest of Georgia O'Keefe; the set of 4 titles is available for $175.
